I AM AN ARTIST
It's Thursday July 10th, 2025 and I have been creating art earlier than I can remember. However, somehow it still feels weird all these years later to actually say the words, " I am an artist ". The only difference is, the older I grow and the more in love I fall with every kind of art, I am starting to realize that it is okay for me to say those four words.
Sometimes, we have this preconceived notion of what it is to create art. I mean of course we know about the greats like Van Gogh and Picasso but then you have those out of the box (equally great) artist like Basquiat who dare to be different and create what they feel and not what they think others want to see. Diving into Basquiats works of art really showed me that art is all about the interpretation of the viewer. His art is like viewing beautifully organized chaos on canvas. It may not make sense at first sight, but if you take the time to look at each thing that was placed on the canvas, you start to unveil the bigger picture and the connection to everything you see. It wasn't your normal beautiful scenery but a distorted one, that still spoke to tragic realities of oppressed people in a beautiful way.
His artwork was silent but spoke volumes.
There is definitely a message amongst the chaos of his pieces just as there is in real life with the injustices that people face every day in our different communities around our country and world. He didn't seem afraid to grab supplies and just put it all out there. No plan, just art!
Now, my style of art is nowhere near the greatness of Basquiat. It's not even in the same realm of the pure raw realness in which his art displayed life. However, like Basquiat, I have embraced that it is okay to paint what you feel. No plan just art!
This has lead to me creating some pretty cool works of art that my viewers seem to embrace. I've developed a pattern of using bright colors and different mediums such as acrylics, paint markers, colored pencils and charcoal to name a few. Finding my style along the way.
I am learning that it is okay to not be traditional in a sense of creating what has already been seen.
I'm learning that there is a space for every style of artists and pushing the limits is never a bad idea when it comes to creativity. What I may think is not good enough, might end up being the best piece I ever created. Time and time again that theory has proven to be correct with each piece I create a long way.
I guess what I'm saying is I have learned that there is is no right or wrong way to, " Be an artist ". You just simply have to embrace that the moment you pick up your materials and begin to create, that you ARE an artist. YOU HAVE TO BELIEVE THAT THERE IS A SPACE FOR YOU. Even if you feel there is no space for you, it is perfectly okay to create that space and open the door for someone to follow.
With that being said I am wholeheartedly embracing that I AM AN ARTIST AND I AM CREATING SPACE... FOR ME, FOR YOU AND FOR THOSE WHO FOLLOW!
As of today the chains have been broken and my conscience has been set free. I shall let my brushes stroke freely and my mind create with no limitations. My only hope is that you love and purchase every piece.... And if you don't love it share it with a friend who might!
